Annually, to better understand the alignment between potential funders and their own organization, nonprofits view funder profiles on Candid’s Foundation Directory more than 4 million times. Here are more details about Candid’s core tools that grantees and applicants typically use to identify potential funding partners.

Grantees can access information about you through Foundation Directory or Foundation Directory Quick Start. Quick Start enables grantseekers to search by:

  • Organization Name
  • Organization Location
  • Organization Type
  • Year(s)
  • EIN

Foundation Directory goes even further and includes real-time knowledge and insight on grantmakers, from in-depth and expanded profiles to snapshots of actual grants that have been awarded. This tool is available by subscription and for free at Candid partner locations. Eligible nonprofits with revenue or expenses under $1M can also gain a free year of access to Foundation Directory Essential through our Go for Gold! promotion.

Keeping your foundation’s information up to date on Candid’s databases is a critical way to share information with grantseekers, grantees, and other funders.

Candid provides several methods of updating your foundation’s profile. While much of our information comes from Form 990s provided by the IRS, since the 990 information can be several years out of data, contain processing errors or missing information, many funders are increasingly providing their data directly to us to improve its completeness, currency, and accuracy.

Help us ensure that the information we present about your grantmaking is current and correct! Here's how:

  • Tell us if you find any wrong information. Our frontline staff will forward it to our editorial team for corrections. Use Foundation Directory Quick Start for free to review the basic information we have on your foundation.
  • Use our free Electronic (eReporting) Reporting Program to send us your grants data directly. Sharing your information directly with us through eReporting ensures that the timeliest information is available to the sector and that the story of your foundation's giving is told accurately.
  • Fill out your foundation's annual questionnaire carefully and return it to us in a timely manner. Every year we mail a questionnaire with a copy of our database entry to foundations with assets of more than $1 million or over $50,000 in annual giving. Entries include contact information, financial data, giving interests, and application information. We also mail out questionnaires to all community foundations. When you return the questionnaire, we update your profile to match the information you’ve given us.
