The nonprofit annual report, although not a legal requirement, is often a valuable communications tool for nonprofits to get the message out about their activities over the course of the past year or years. It may also be the only published document that lists and recognizes donors to the organization, as this information is not required in the Form 990, the annual nonprofit information return required by the IRS.
