IP-Authentication access troubleshooting guide
All community partner locations should have IP-Authentication/Recognition access to Foundation Directory and GuideStar on-site at your location. Essentially, this means that while connected to the wireless or wired network, anyone can automatically be logged in without using any form of credentials.
How to troubleshoot access issues:
Step 1: Verify your organization is using the correct links. Use only the links below; all others are not supported and will cause intermittent or complete lack of access. If your organization bookmarked or has the links stored on your website, please verify they are redirecting to the full two separate links below.
- Foundation Directory: https://fconline.foundationcenter.org/ipl.php
- GuideStar: https://guidestar.org/ipl
Step 2: If the site is still asking for a username/password, it could potentially be a browser issue. Browsers store usernames and passwords in cookies. If someone previously logged into their personal account on a browser, it can cause you to re-enter your credentials. Please try the links in incognito mode/private browser to ensure cookies aren’t the issue.
Step 3: If neither of the links opens correctly in a private browser, then we need an updated IP address or range for your organization. Using a computer linked to the network, on-site visit https://fconline.foundationcenter.org/ipcheck.php, copy and paste the results, and send networkmail@candid.org the complete results. Or please provide the exact IPv4 start/stop range.
NOTE: These are not supported for IP access:
- Classless Inter-Domain Routing (CiDR) addresses
- IPv6 addresses
- VPN Split Tunneling (if it’s for a dynamic range, you can send a narrow range that pertains only to one physical location)
- We do not provide proxy support; we can provide a sample stanza for EZProxy specifically, but your organization will need to set up and configure it. Then provide us with the proxy IP to configure your account.
Frequently asked questions:
Q: To log patrons in, should I enter my credentials?
A: No, your credentials are personal and should not be shared, stored on a computer, or given to the public. Public access via the network should not require any credentials. If it is prompting you to log in, please refer to steps 1-3.
Q: Why do I have a login, and what is it used for?
A: The admin credentials login allows you to access usage stats for Foundation Directory. For help accessing usage stats, please refer to this guide.
Q: When I use the correct link to access Foundation Directory, I get redirected to “Foundation Directory Quick Start”. Or I get a message that there is no active subscription found.
A: Please email a screenshot to networkmail@candid.org, and be sure to include the physical location from where you are trying to access the product and your organization’s name so we can troubleshoot for you.
Q: Should we list Foundation Directory and/or GuideStar as databases?
A: Yes, they can both be listed as databases or reference tools. Be sure to note that it is only accessible on-site and whether it is available at one specific location or in multiple branches (depending upon your subscription). We also recommend listing it with your other resources for nonprofits.
Q: What should be included in the website descriptions for these resources?
A: You can find resource descriptions in our Candid promotion toolkit, which includes the following:
