Learn how to create clear and useful budgets and use them as the valuable planning tools they are. This workshop is given in plain English, not accounting jargon, and is meant to help grantseekers organize their efforts for funding requests. It is appropriate for nonprofits in all fields and individual grantseekers.


  • Elaine Luttrull, director of financial analysis, The Juilliard School, explains the who, what, when, why, and how of budgets, and clarifies the differing roles of staff and board in the process.
  • Michael Royce, executive director, New York Foundation for the Arts, gives real examples of not-so-perfect budgets that needed amplification or clarification in order to pass muster at his grantmaking organization. He also provides basic information about using a fiscal sponsor.
  • Moderated by Fran Smyth, manager of arts services, The Arts & Business Council of New York.
