About
“While we have seen growing numbers of funders tackling racial equity, we now have more lessons to confront power, shift how we distribute our resources and move toward system-wide transformation.”
- Lori Villarosa, Co-author of Grantmaking with a Racial Justice Lens and Founder/ ED of Philanthropic Initiative for Racial Equity
In 2006, the Philanthropic Initiative for Racial Equity (PRE) partnered with GrantCraft to lift up what it meant to move from a "colorblind" frame or a basic diversity frame to actually applying a racial equity lens to their grantmaking, building on work that PRE had been advancing since its launch in 2003. Grantmaking with a Racial Equity Lens reached thousands of funders and nonprofits and became a seminal resource for the field.
In 2019, PRE created an updated guide to reflect the ways funders were advancing a racial justice lens, starting initially by asking racial justice movement ecosystem leaders what they would like to see philanthropy doing differently.
A racial equity lens separates symptoms from causes; a racial justice lens brings into view the confrontations necessary for real change.
Join Lori Villarosa of PRE, for a conversation about the frameworks of racial equity and racial justice and the implications for grantseekers. Hear directly from Michelle Morales of the Woods Fund Chicago and Castle Redmond of The California Endowment--two grantmakers whose foundations have advanced both racial equity and racial justice grantmaking--as they share the kinds of shifts they made and sought as they deepened their investments for greater community transformation.
Candid believes that realizing racial equity in the United States and around the world will require nonprofits and foundations to step up like never before. In 2020, Candid created its Funding for Racial Equity page to track the racial justice and racial equity efforts of funders and to gather research, learning materials, and voices from the field. Join Candid in conversation with several grantmakers from around the United States to discuss their efforts. Emerging from this session, we hope attendees will gain broader understanding of the work already underway, opportunities to get involved and what challenges remain.
