About
Join us for a day of programming tailored for artists and administrators working in the independent theater community. This special arts event is designed to support the great work independent theater is doing in New York City, and offers four sessions to either help your independent theater move forward in terms of grants, space, advocacy and new ideas, or to help artists and supporters of this community gain valuable insight into its inner workings.
Whether you choose only specific events you'd like to attend, or opt to spend the day with us, you will not want to miss this rare opportunity to hear from these independent theater professionals who will be sharing their time and ideas with you.
11:00 am-12:10 pm:
STRENGTHENING COMMUNICATION BETWEEN THE INDEPENDENT THEATER COMMUNITY AND ITS AUDIENCES (AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE UPPER WEST SIDE THEATER DISTRICT)
Join Hazen Cuyler, Artistic Director of Greenhouse Ensemble, a theater, film, art and music company dedicated to bringing together the arts on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, as he leads a discussion about strengthening communication and involvement between artists and audiences in the independent theater community. Hazen will also address the burgeoning Upper West Side theater district that he is involved in forming. Whether you’re an indie theater administrator or supporter, or looking to become more involved in this community, don’t miss the opportunity to gain deeper insight into this consolidated network for audiences seeking independent theater.
12:10-1:00 pm:
CANDID RESOURCE ORIENTATION FOR INDEPENDENT THEATER EVENT ATTENDEES
If you’re joining us for morning and afternoon sessions, you may either take this time for some lunch on your own, or, to hang out with us a bit more, attend our orientation conducted by Candid’s own Community Outreach Manager, Tracy Kaufman, and learn how Candid’s products (particularly Foundation Directory Online, Foundation Maps, and Candid’s classes and workshops—many free) may be able to help you gain insight into generating the funds you need to sustain your independent theater and/or theater projects.
1:00-2:10 pm:
REAL ESTATE SOLUTIONS FOR INDEPENDENT THEATERS
Join IndieSpace members of the board and Executive Director, Randi Berry, for a conversation on indie theater and real estate. IndieSpace provides free support to theater makers that are facing a real estate transition, challenge or opportunity through their Advisory and Consulting program and through the creation of below market performance space. They will discuss obstacles that artists face when obtaining and operating a theater and creative solutions to the space issue in NYC. Register for an up close and in-depth conversation with IndieSpace theater professionals.
2:30-3:40 pm:
A CONVERSATION WITH THE INDIE THEATER FUND AND THE LEAGUE OF INDEPENDENT THEATER
Join Randi Berry, Executive Director of The Indie Theater Fund and Chris Harcum, Director of a Bright Future at the League of Independent Theater (LIT) as they lead a discussion about the work their organizations are doing in support of independent theater. This is a rare chance for you to gain first-hand knowledge of the grants and services offered by The Indie Theater Fund, and the advocacy programs LIT implements in order to fight for artists and other members of the indie theater community. If you’re involved with an indie theater or are considering becoming more involved in this community, this program is an opportunity to hear from insiders in the field and get the chance to meet fellow artists.
