Candid Learning for Funders grew out of GrantCraft, a project launched by the Ford Foundation in 2001 to help its program officers learn on the job and from each other. It grew into a collection of practical wisdom aimed at helping grantmakers work more effectively. In 2011, GrantCraft became a service of Foundation Center (now Candid) and the European Foundation Centre, a collaboration that continued for three years until Foundation Center took over sole stewardship of the program in 2014.
Candid Learning for Funders combined the practical wisdom of funders worldwide with the expertise of Candid to improve the practice of philanthropy and sought to deliver the knowledge funders need to be strategic and effective in their work. Its free collection of resources included guides, infographics, case studies, blogs, podcasts, interactive tools and more, many in multiple languages. This diverse suite of content was complemented by other Candid resources and external contributions. The resources were designed to benefit a global network of funders and foundation professionals but were utilized by a broad spectrum of practitioners including nonprofit staff, academics, and consultants.
Candid Learning for Funders was sunset in 2025 as Candid looks for new ways to support the needs and efforts of both grantmakers and grantseekers alike. As part of this continued support and in recognition of the useful knowledge contained within, more than 400 Candid Learning for Funders resources continue to be available through Issue Lab, Candid’s open access repository for social sector knowledge. These resources will be offered both in Issue Lab’s main collection as well as through the Philanthropy in Practice special collection which focuses on resources designed to help people do more good.
